NCL Spirit Cruise - Feb 2008 Galleries

N.O. Departure & Day at Sea : Feb 24-25, 2008 (Sun-Mon). Al and Bobbie departed the Port of New Orleans about 5:30 PM on the NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) Spirit headed for a 7-day cruise to the Western Caribbean and the ports of Roatan Island, Honduras; Santo Tomas de Castillo, Guatemala; Belize City, Belize; and Cozumel, Mexico. The trip down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico took about 5 hours. We awoke on Monday morning to a beautiful day of sun and smooth sailing. We had booked a 11th deck room with bacony and thoroughly enjoyed lounging around the ship and anticipating our excursions to various Mayan ruins at each port.

Roatan Island, Honduras : Feb 26, 2008 (Tue). We awoke to find the ship had rounded the tip of the Yucatan peninsula and was sailing southwest toward Roatan Island, one of the Bay Islands about 30 miles off the Honduran coast. After about 1100 miles, we arrived at the port about 2:00 PM. We really enjoyed our afternoon excursion in a air-conditioned bus to the Carambola Botanical Gardens on Sandy Bay.

Santo Tomas de Castillo, Guatemala : Feb 27, 2008 (Wed). After sailing about 135 miles westerly overnight from Roatan Island, we arrived at our next port in Guatemala, Santo Tomas de Castillo. Our full-day excursion on an air-conditioned bus took us the the Quiriga Mayan Ruins, near the Dulce River. Excursion to Quirigua Mayan Ruins and Dulce River.

Feb 27, 2008 (Wed). After sailing about 135 miles westerly overnight from Roatan Island, we arrived at our next port in Guatemala, Santo Tomas de Castillo. Our full-day excursion on an air-conditioned bus took us the the Quiriga Mayan Ruins, near the Dulce River. Excursion to Quirigua Mayan Ruins and Dulce River.

Belize City, Belize : Feb 28, 2008 (Thu). Sailing about 125 miles north overnight from Santo Tomas, we made anchorage offshore at the port of Belize City, Belize. There, we had our most interesting full-day excursion to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins via a one-hour boat ride up the New River. Cozumel, Mexico : Feb 29, 2008 (Fri). Sailing 220 miles north overnight, we arrived at our next port on Cozumel Island early today. After docking, we had to take a large "tender" across the 20 mile stretch of water separating Cozumel from the mainland to the port of Playa del Carmen. There we boarded our excursion bus for the one hour trip to the Tulum Mayan Ruins. This was our second time at Tulum but we still greatly enjoyed the site again. So much to see there. That night, we set sail back to New Orleans and, after sailing all day on Saturday and Saturday night, we docked in New Orleans about 8:00 AM Sunday morning. It was a fantastic trip and we are already anticipating another cruise in the hopefully not-to-distant future.
