Burns Point & Fourchon Beach, LA - Apr 20-21, 2008 : Al and sons, Les & Mel, start our weekend fishing trip at Burns Point, Louisiana, on East Cote Blanche Bay (about 65 miles from Lafayette). This state boat launch/RV park is surrounded by shady cypress and oak trees and often yields redfish and other saltwater game fish. Fishing the quiet waters around the park also provides encounters with pelicans and alligators and other wildlife. During the 16 mile drive from US 90 on LA 317, it is not unusual to see raccoons, opossums, and armadillos. Gorgeous sunsets are another common experience. By late morning, it was evident that the fish just weren't cooperating so we decided to pack up and head another 100 miles southeast to the Fourchon Public Beach. Les had assured us that we would certainly find the big "bull reds" there. We arrived at Fourchon Beach, off LA 1, in the early afternoon. The beach is unique...for about 1 mile along the beach there are 12 sunken, rock-filled, barges just about 140 yards offshore. Sadly, beach access to motorized vehicles is now prohibited due to private dictates. We set up on the beach and fished until late evening. The only fish caught were a nice Sheepshead and Black Drum (by Al, of course) and a few "hardheads" (by Les, of course). But the weather was great...sunny and high clouds. Mel crashed for the night and Al & Les fished on until 3:30 AM under a beautiful full moon. Weather remained mostly clear and breezy, around 70 degrees. The only other fish caught were a few small white trout. We headed back in the morning, quite tired, not too clean, and a little sad over lack of fish. But the consensus was that the trip was still successful! We all enjoyed being together and sharing the experience. Hey, Craig, Brian, Mike ...wish you had been there!
